Trump's Regime of Retribution and Reward

The ex-president's intense appetite for revenge has swiftly morphed into a methodical apparatus. Within the year since his election, the chief executive's rage and impulses have assumed the shape of official policies in ways comparable to earlier repressive regimes. Federal personnel who resist his demands are summarily fired and replaced by supporters. Political leaders who question him encounter legal action, court proceedings and punishment. Opponents have been labeled under executive memoranda as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “against free markets”, and menaced with criminal charges as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Remade

Every instance involving prosecution of political opponents and leniency for his allies exhibits its own unique features. However, despite their specific form, they represent examples of what has arisen as a deliberate technique. Such incidents are far from coincidental. His removal of federal attorneys and law enforcement officials, coupled with his installation of supporters in senior positions, commenced quickly, quickly assumed a regularity, and has now been shaped into a system. DoJ and the FBI have been transformed into partisan agencies under his explicit command to carry out his wishes. Injustice has been turned into standard. It represents the system of punishment.

Leadership is preoccupied with penalizing the leader's supposed enemies than they are with defending our country's safety.

Within the Apparatus

The foundation of this system has been revealed in the court filing of multiple previous senior FBI officials lodged in September in the federal court in Washington against FBI director an administration figure and top lawyer Pam Bondi for unlawful firing in “a campaign of payback against the officials for what Defendants judged to be a failure to demonstrate proper devotion”. In the complaint that Brian Driscoll, the ex- interim leader, recounts a discussion in which the director “freely confessed the impropriety of his conduct”.

He had attempted to protect law enforcement officers from being fired, the complaint claims. He told him that “they” – perceived by the official to be the executive branch and federal prosecutors – had directed him to fire everyone who they determined as having been involved in a criminal investigation against Trump. The complaint adds: “He stated that he had to dismiss the individuals his bosses told him to fire, because his chance to hold his own position depended on the removal of the agents who handled investigations involving the chief executive. The director commented that there was no option he or him could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the agency tried to place the leader in prison and he recalls it clearly.’” Once Driscoll informed Patel he was breaking the agency's own internal rules, Patel supposedly said “he recognized that and he was aware the essence of the swift terminations were probably unlawful”.

Extensive Impact

Following the director's claimed admission to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and repurposed for the administration's system of punishment. Six of the bureau's top officials were terminated or compelled to leave in the first days of the government. About 4,500 professional attorneys at the justice department have agreed to a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than several government attorneys, among them those in the New York office, quit in objection over what they viewed as ideological pressure in dropping the criminal prosecution against the city leader, a political figure, in as a trade for his collaboration with Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which handles corruption cases, has been diminished to two attorneys. The rights protection unit has been decimated: seventy percent of its employees has resigned. A third of executives at the justice department have left. The division upholding ecological regulations has lost 50% its management.

Rewards and Sanctions

Regarding the mayor's situation, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, she, resigned in dissent against what she characterized as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, his “enforcement chief,” appeared as the agent with him on television to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in NYC.”. Meanwhile, a former official, earlier the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who brokered the arrangement, was awarded an appellate federal judgeship, a likely stepping stone to the highest court.

The president's immunity for wrongdoings carried out while in office, awarded by the extraordinary decision of the conservative on the highest court, thus thwarting his legal action over the political violence and preserving his political viability for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he stands to shield his loyalists. Under these circumstances, he has been empowered to enable wrongdoing. The impact of the judicial ruling permeates his administration and the Republican Party completely. The legal case has escalated. Similar to a past leader's legal adviser John Dean commented about the Watergate
