Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
