Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
