Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
