The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
